A victim of a violent attempted murder has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to officers from the Metropolitan Police for saving her life during a brutal attack in Southwark in October 2023.
In the early hours of October 22, police were called to multiple reports from the public regarding a domestic incident. Upon arriving within minutes, officers found the victim collapsed on the street, having suffered life-threatening injuries after being repeatedly struck on the head with a hammer by 51-year-old Joel Victorious. The victim was also chased and threatened with knives in front of her children during the horrifying ordeal.
Officers quickly administered emergency first aid to the victim, who was covered in blood, and also provided life-saving support to Victorious, who had stabbed himself during the frenzied incident.
Victorious, of Waleran Flats, Southwark, was charged with attempted murder following a thorough investigation. On September 5, 2024, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Old Bailey.
This case comes as part of the Met’s ongoing commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, under the “New Met for London Plan,” which has seen an additional 565 officers placed into specialist teams focused on this vital work.
Detective Inspector Andy Kinkead of Central South praised the actions of the attending officers and detectives, stating, “This shocking case demonstrates the dedication and professionalism of the Metropolitan Police Service, from those attending the scene to the detectives who built the case. Officers have continued to provide expert support to the family during this extremely upsetting time.
The victim expressed her deep appreciation for the swift response of the Met, stating, “Their professionalism and bravery during an incredibly difficult time will forever be remembered.” She also extended special thanks to DC Simone Kidd, the investigator who worked tirelessly to ensure justice was served.
DC Kidd commended the victim’s courage, adding, “I want to commend the victim for her bravery and for supporting this investigation to a positive outcome. I sincerely hope she can now move forward.”
This case serves as a powerful reminder of the dedication of the Met’s officers in protecting the community and delivering justice.
