Super Typhoon Yagi has caused widespread destruction after making landfall in northern Vietnam, following its passage through southern China. The powerful storm, which brought wind speeds exceeding 230 km/h, has uprooted thousands of trees, swept ships and boats out to sea, and claimed at least three lives across the two countries.
In Vietnam, Yagi struck the provinces of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, with winds reaching 149 km/h. Residents witnessed roofs being ripped from buildings and trees being uprooted. Tragically, a man in Hai Duong province lost his life when strong winds caused a tree to fall on him. Local authorities described the storm as the most severe in decades.
The island of Co To, located near Quang Ninh, bore the brunt of the storm’s wrath. Numerous buildings, including homes, schools, and offices, were damaged, with many losing their roofs to the storm’s intensity. Over 20,000 people were evacuated to safer areas ahead of the storm.
Before reaching Vietnam, Yagi had already wreaked havoc in southern China’s Hainan Island. The storm led to the evacuation of approximately 460,000 people, with two lives lost and 92 others injured. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with many communities sheltering in public buildings as they await aid.
Authorities in both countries are assessing the full extent of the damage and are working to provide assistance to the affected communities.
