A murder investigation has been launched after Northumbria Police discovered the body of a woman in her 50s inside a house on Sunderland Road in Gateshead during the early hours of Thursday morning.
A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after being initially detained for acting suspiciously in the area late on Wednesday night. Police are treating the incident as an isolated case and believe that all parties involved are known to each other. Authorities have reassured the public that there is no wider threat.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Steel from Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team issued an appeal for information: “I am today appealing for anybody who witnessed a man acting suspiciously in the areas of Sunderland Road and Durham Road, including the junction with the A167, between 10.30pm yesterday and 12:30, to get in touch.
The woman’s family has been informed and is being supported by police during this difficult time. Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
