An off-duty police officer has been assaulted in Swindon

An off-duty police officer has been assaulted in Swindon.

The incident happened in Cheney Manor Road at around 5.40pm this evening (20/04).

The victim, a male off-duty Wiltshire Police officer, was approached by a man who hit him over the head with an unknown object.

At this stage he has not required hospital treatment.

Officers, supported by armed response and the police helicopter, have been carrying out searches around the area.

At this stage nobody has been arrested.

Superintendent Chris Chammings said: “Although our enquiries are at a very early stage, this appears to have been a targeted attack on a police officer.

“Thankfully, the officer involved does not appear to be seriously injured, but it is frightening to think how this could have easily had a very different outcome.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed the assault, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the incident, to contact police urgently.”

Anyone with information should call Swindon CID on 101, quoting log 270 of today (20/04).
