A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with multiple sexual assaults on two children, Surrey Police have confirmed.
Jamie Howlett, 33, formerly of Horley, faces six counts of sexual assault by touching a child under 13. Surrey Police stated that three of these charges relate to one victim, while the remaining three pertain to a second victim.
In addition to the charges involving children, Howlett has been further charged with multiple offences against a third, adult victim. These charges include:
- Five counts of rape
- One charge of controlling and coercive behaviour
- One charge of sexual assault by touching
- One charge of sexual assault by penetration
- One charge of assault causing actual bodily harm
Howlett is scheduled to appear at Staines Magistrates Court on August 9.
Official Statements
Surrey Police released a statement confirming the charges and detailing the allegations against Howlett. We take allegations of this nature extremely seriously and are committed to ensuring justice for the victims,” a spokesperson for the force said.
The Metropolitan Police Service has also been informed of the charges against Howlett. A spokesperson for the Met said: “We are aware of the charges against one of our officers and are fully cooperating with Surrey Police in their investigation. The officer has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the court proceedings.
Community Response
The news has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly in Horley, where Howlett previously resided. Local residents have expressed their shock and concern over the allegations.
To hear that someone who is supposed to protect the community is being charged with such serious offences is deeply disturbing,” said Jane Doe, a Horley resident.
Legal Proceedings
Howlett’s court appearance on August 9 at Staines Magistrates Court will mark the beginning of what is expected to be a closely watched legal process. Legal experts suggest that the severity of the charges means Howlett could face significant prison time if convicted.
Support for Victims
Surrey Police have assured that support services are being provided to all victims involved in the case. We are working closely with specialist support services to ensure that all victims receive the necessary support and care during this difficult time,” the police spokesperson added.
Public Encouragement
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward. We encourage anyone who may have further information to contact Surrey Police. Your information could be crucial to the investigation,” the spokesperson said.
