Oladip Oshodi, a 48-year-old resident of Dagenham, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for a series of heinous crimes, including rape, administering a noxious substance, threats to kill, grievous bodily harm, and controlling coercive behaviour. The sentencing took place at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, July 5, 2024.
Oshodi’s arrest occurred on July 12, 2023, following an investigation by detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s East Area Public Protection Unit. Throughout the legal proceedings, he remained in custody.
The charges stemmed from an incident that unfolded on the evening of July 11, 2023, at Oshodi’s residence in the Mayesbrook area of Dagenham. The victim, a woman known to Oshodi, endured a horrifying ordeal. Despite her explicit refusal, Oshodi raped her twice during that fateful night. Additionally, he physically assaulted her, prompting her desperate escape by jumping from a ground-floor window onto the street. Concerned passersby immediately called the police, who provided assistance and ensured her safety.
The survivor received medical treatment and emotional support from specialist officers. Detective Constable Serena McGhee emphasized the gravity of Oshodi’s actions, stating, “Oshodi is a dangerous man, and it is right that he will now serve a long sentence in a place where he will not pose a threat to women. I commend the bravery of the victim and the witnesses in this case.”
PC Kayleigh Grafton, a specialist officer dealing with victims of sexual offences, urged other survivors to come forward: “The survivor in this case was fleeing for her life when she jumped onto the street to escape this man. I hope that the sentence handed down encourages other women who have been victims of sexual offences to seek help. We are here to support you every step of the way.”
