The Metropolitan Police announced on Thursday that they are revisiting their investigation into a tragic car crash that resulted in the deaths of two eight-year-old girls, Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau, at Study Prep school in Wimbledon on July 6 last year, the final day of the summer term.
The force decided to conduct a review following concerns expressed by the families of the two girls, along with other affected parties. According to the families, the initial investigation into the accident was not sufficiently thorough. The car crash involved a 4×4 vehicle driven by Claire Freemantle, who reportedly suffered an epileptic seizure before the incident.
The recent determination by authorities that Ms. Freemantle will not face criminal charges due to her medical condition has spurred further dismay among the families of the young victims. “We remain unconvinced that the Crown Prosecution Service [CPS] have reached a decision based on all the facts,” expressed the families in a joint statement. They added that from their perspective, “justice has neither been done, nor has been seen to be done today.”
Responding to the families’ dissatisfaction, the Metropolitan Police issued a statement stating, “Having listened to concerns from the families of both Nuria and Selena • and other parties affected – we are committed to addressing their questions. The Specialist Crime Review Berkup [SCRG] will therefore be carrying out a review of the investigation.”
The police assure that their initial examination was comprehensive, with officers working “tirelessly through every detail of the incident” to ensure a complete and thorough investigation.
In her own statement, Ms. Freemantle expressed her “deepest sorrow” over the incident and explained that she had lost consciousness during the event, leaving her with “no recollection of what took place.”
