A 37-year-old man from Leatherhead was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision between a moped and a white Seat Ibiza in Esher, Surrey. The incident has sparked a murder investigation, with a 52-year-old man from Orpington in custody.
A specialist team of officers from Surrey Police is diligently working to piece together the events leading to the early morning crash. The collision occurred around 6:20 AM on Monday on the A244 Claremont Lane in the leafy suburb of Esher.
The police were alerted to the scene following several calls reporting the incident. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the 37-year-old moped rider was declared dead at the scene. His family has been notified and is receiving support during this difficult time.
Currently, a 52-year-old man from Orpington is being held in custody on suspicion of murder. He is undergoing questioning by detectives as part of the ongoing investigation.
Detective Inspector Natalie Pearce stated, “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this very difficult time. Our investigation is in the very early stages, and a specialist team of officers is working around the clock to follow up on enquiries.”
Authorities are appealing for public assistance to further their investigation. “We are hoping to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, anyone that may have any dashcam footage of the collision, or anyone who may have seen a red moped and a white Seat Ibiza in the area in the moments before the collision,” Det Insp Pearce added. The manner of driving of both vehicles prior to the crash is of particular interest to the police.
In addition, Surrey Police has referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to prior contact with the suspect, ensuring transparency and accountability in the investigation.
