A few days ago, BMW M GmbH unveiled the highly anticipated seventh-generation BMW M5, and today, the high-performance sedan officially began production at the BMW Group Plant in Dingolfing. This milestone marks the first time the iconic M5 model comes off the assembly line with an electrified drivetrain.
Electrified Performance
The new BMW M5 features the model-specific M HYBRID system, which combines a potent V8 engine with an e-drive to deliver an impressive system output of 727 horsepower. With this powertrain, the M5 can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 3.5 seconds. What sets it apart is the high-voltage battery, boasting an energy content of 18.6 kilowatt-hours, providing an electric range of 67 to 69 kilometres (WLTP) – a unique feature among its competitors.
Dingolfing: A Hub for M5 Production
Plant Director Christoph Schröder expressed pride in Dingolfing’s role in building the latest generation of the BMW M5. The site has a rich history, having delivered pre-assembled bodies for the very first M5 models back in the 1980s. Since the second generation (starting in 1988), the entire production process for this high-performance sports car has taken place at the Dingolfing plant in Lower Bavaria.
Under One Roof Production
Dingolfing plays a crucial role in the M5’s production. Central components are either produced on-site or supplied by nearby component plants. For instance:
- The specially tailored chassis for the BMW M5 comes from Dingolfing component plant 02.10.
- The high-voltage battery assembly takes place next door at plant 02.20, the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production.
- The carbon-fibre roof, another key feature, is supplied by the plant in Landshut, located 30 kilometres away.
M-Specific Modifications
In the body shop, the BMW M5 receives additional measures to stiffen its structure. The widened body with flared wheel arches allows for the integration of the M-specific rear axle. Customers can choose from ten standard and 150 special request finishes in the paint shop.
Production and Beyond
Over the coming weeks, production at the Dingolfing plant will gradually increase to several dozen BMW M5 vehicles per day. The European market launch of the new model is scheduled for November 2, 2024. And as if that weren’t exciting enough, another model – the new BMW M5 Touring – will soon join the lineup, expanding BMW M GmbH’s offerings and completing the new BMW 5 Series range.
