Weelsby Hall, a symbol of Grimsby’s rich heritage, will be opening its doors to the public for a rare opportunity to explore its history on Sunday, September 15, 2024. Owned by the Linkage Community Trust, this historic site is not typically accessible to the public, making this event an exclusive opportunity for history enthusiasts and the local community.
As part of the Heritage Open Days Festival, England’s largest celebration of history and culture, Weelsby Hall invites visitors to step back in time and discover its fascinating past. Built-in the late 1890s for George Sleight, the first Baronet of Weelsby, the hall stands as a testament to Grimsby’s illustrious fishing heritage. Acquired by the Linkage Community Trust in 1982, Weelsby Hall has served the local and national needs of people with learning disabilities.
During the open day, visitors can explore the grand building through self-guided tours of the grounds and downstairs rooms. Additionally, short guided tours will provide insights into select rooms on the first floor. Local historian and project volunteer David Smith will share captivating stories about the Hall’s architecture, former residents, and notable events that have shaped its identity over time.
The Weelsby Hall estate offers a scenic escape from the modern world, inviting exploration and contemplation among nature. Attendees will receive a complimentary guide to help them explore the grounds and uncover the hidden gem’s past and present. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.
Due to the popularity of previous open days, booking will be essential as space is limited. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to delve into Grimsby’s hidden history and learn about ongoing efforts to preserve Weelsby Hall!
