Far-right activist Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley Lennon, was arrested in Canada on suspicion of an immigration offence. The 41-year-old was detained on Monday and later released, but he has been ordered to remain in the country and hand in his passport.
Robinson, who was due to speak at several events in Canada in the coming days, was apprehended by authorities and footage posted online showed him being handcuffed and led to the back of a waiting car. A man, who appeared to be a plain-clothes police officer, informed him that he was being detained under an outstanding immigration warrant.
In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, Robinson said: “None of this makes sense, I’m now detained in Calgary, prevented from leaving the city, these conditions stop me from continuing my tour of Canada and meeting with guests for podcasts. I’m not even allowed to leave to travel home.
Robinson’s detention has sparked reactions from his supporters and critics alike, with many awaiting further details on the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Robinson is a controversial figure, known for his far-right activism and for founding the English Defence League. His presence in Canada and subsequent arrest have drawn significant attention, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding immigration and activism.
