The search for 19-year-old Jay Slater, a British teenager who disappeared on the holiday island of Tenerife, is entering its sixth day. Despite extensive efforts by rescue teams, including helicopters, rescue dogs, and drones, no trace of Slater has been found.
Slater, an apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was holidaying with friends in Tenerife when he went missing. He was last heard from when he called a friend to say he was setting off on an 11-hour walk back to his accommodation after missing his bus.
The search has focused on the rural hills and mountains of Tenerife, particularly the village of Masca. Emergency workers combed overgrown terrain, hillsides, and rivers, but their efforts yielded no breakthroughs. Search and rescue personnel carefully inspected dead palm trees covering a river near an Airbnb property where Slater had reportedly been driven. The property owner, identified as Ophelia, saw Slater walk past her property but lost sight of him afterwards.
The Lancashire Constabulary offered support to the Spanish Guardia Civil, but the latter confirmed that they currently have sufficient resources for the search. However, the offer remains open should the situation change. Slater’s family and friends, drained and anxious, continue to hope for his safe return. Rachel Louise Harg, the administrator of the “Jay Slater Missing” Facebook group, expressed their ongoing efforts and gratitude for the support they’ve received.
Lucy Law, a friend who attended the NRG music festival with Slater, received a distressing call from him on Monday morning. Slater was “lost in the mountains, unaware of his surroundings, desperately needing a drink, and with his phone at 1% battery.” The walk from his last known location to his accommodation would have taken approximately 11 hours on foot.
As the search continues, the community rallies together, hoping for a positive outcome in this heart-wrenching ordeal. The picturesque island of Tenerife, known for its natural beauty, now holds a sombre backdrop to the ongoing search for Jay Slater.
