A 19-year-old British teenager, Jay Slater, has gone missing in Tenerife after telling a friend that he “didn’t know where he was” and needed water. Jay was last seen “in the middle of mountains with nothing around” as he attempted to walk back to his holiday apartment. The incident occurred during his first holiday abroad without his parents, where he had travelled to attend the NRG Tenerife Weekender music festival.
According to his friend Lucy, Jay failed to return home after staying with people he had met on the holiday. He had gone out for a night with friends and ended up at an unfamiliar location. His phone battery was critically low, and he desperately needed water. The last location of Jay’s phone, before it died, was registered at a hiking trail in the middle of the mountains near the village of Masca.
Lucy, who is now frantically searching for her friend, explained that Jay had gone to a friend’s house, not realising how far away it was. In the morning, he set off walking, relying on his phone’s Maps app, but ended up lost in the mountains. His distress call to Lucy came at 08:30 just before his phone died.
The Civil Guard in Tenerife has mobilised emergency crews, including a police helicopter and mountain rescuers, to search for Jay. The area where he went missing, the Rural de Teno Park, is popular with hikers. The Greim (Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group) is also involved in the search. Drones are being used to aid in the search efforts.
Jay was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, shorts, and trainers. His family and friends are anxiously awaiting any news about his whereabouts. The situation remains urgent as authorities continue their efforts to find the missing teenager.
