Two men, Abdul Hakim and Nasser Nashir, have been sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court for their actions in assisting murderers attempting to evade justice. The case revolves around the death of Lamar Leroy Griffiths, who tragically lost his life during a shooting incident.
On 29 March 2022, two assailants fired multiple gunshots at Diamond Hand Car Wash in Sheffield’s Burngreave area. Lamar, a 21-year-old innocent bystander, was struck by one of the bullets and succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts. Following Lamar’s death, an extensive murder investigation led to several arrests.
Subsequent inquiries revealed that Hakim and Nashir actively worked to destroy evidence related to the crime and aided two murder suspects in fleeing the country. Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bowell, the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO), highlighted their determination and persistence in helping the suspects escape, even amidst Covid restrictions.
Hakim, 26, residing on Cardwell Drive in Sheffield, received a sentence of seven years and eight months for assisting an offender, arson, and possession of an offensive weapon (unrelated to this incident). Nashir, 33, from Kirton Road, Sheffield, was sentenced to five years for assisting an offender.
DCI Bowell emphasised the significance of this verdict for Lamar’s family and friends. While Lamar was an unintended victim of the attack, the investigation aimed to hold accountable not only the shooters but also those who facilitated their escape.
