Volunteers at Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) are set to receive a valuable asset in their mission to support communities across the county. In a small ceremony held yesterday (4 June), coinciding with the 40th anniversary of National Volunteers’ Week, KFRS introduced its latest addition: the Volunteer Response Team (VRT) welfare vehicle.

This new vehicle, specially designed to cater to the needs of both volunteers and affected residents during emergencies, marks a significant enhancement in the service’s ability to provide immediate support and comfort during distressing situations.

The VRT, comprising dedicated and compassionate individuals, is tasked with responding to fire and rescue emergencies round the clock, offering reassurance, guidance, and practical assistance to those impacted. From coordinating essential contacts with relevant agencies to arranging temporary accommodation and simply lending a sympathetic ear, the VRT plays a crucial role in aiding individuals and families during times of crisis.

Equipped with a comfortable seating area, Wi-Fi, and other essential amenities for both volunteers and affected residents, the welfare vehicle serves as a safe haven away from the chaos of the incident. Its design ensures privacy and confidentiality, allowing for meaningful conversations and effective support provision.

Jess Antoniou, KFRS Volunteering Manager, expressed excitement about the vehicle’s deployment, emphasizing its significance in providing volunteers with the necessary resources to care for individuals experiencing distress. Antoniou highlighted the vehicle’s versatility, mentioning its potential to offer welfare facilities for crews, further enhancing its value within the service.
