In recent days, Salisbury residents have fallen victim to a cunning scam involving individuals impersonating police officers. This type of crime, known as Courier Fraud, preys on trust and exploits victims through deceptive phone calls.
How Does Courier Fraud Work?
- Initial Contact: Fraudsters pose as police officers or bank officials, reaching out to victims via telephone.
- Building Trust: The caller may confirm easily accessible personal details, such as the victim’s full name and address.
- Deceptive Tactics: The fraudster claims that money has been mistakenly removed from the victim’s account. They may also request funds for evidence purposes or ask the victim to purchase high-value “evidence.”
- Cash Withdrawal: Victims are instructed to withdraw a substantial sum of money.
- Courier Pickup: A courier later collects the cash, ostensibly to check for fingerprints or identify counterfeit banknotes. Alternatively, victims may be asked to mail the cash to an address provided by the fraudster.
- Password Exchange: Often, a password is given, which the courier will use during the money collection.
Recent Incidents in Salisbury Over the past six days, we’ve received nine reports of such incidents. The fraudsters frequently impersonate authorities like the Flying Squad, Metropolitan Police, or Bourne Hill Police Station.
Stay Vigilant and Protect Yourself
- Hang Up: If you suspect a scam call, disconnect immediately. Verify details with your bank or the police using a different phone line.
- Guard Your Card: Never allow strangers to take possession of your debit or credit card. Hand it over only at your bank and destroy it if canceled.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you’ve encountered this scam but haven’t lost money, report it to the Salisbury Neighbourhood Policing team or visit the Bourne Hill enquiry office.
- Lost Money? Report It: If you’ve fallen victim to this crime, report the loss via 101 or the online reporting system.
- Emergency Situation: If the crime is ongoing, dial 999 immediately.
