Bradley Smith, a 46-year-old resident of Imperial Avenue, Chelmsford, has been found guilty of multiple sexual offences and coercive controlling behaviour following an extensive investigation by the Adult Sexual Abuse Investigation Team. The verdict was delivered at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, May 13, after a two-week-long trial.
Background
The investigation into Smith began in 2021 when a woman contacted Essex Police to report several sexual offences. The victim alleged that Smith had taken explicit images of her without her consent and threatened to share them. The case also revealed disturbing details about Smith’s actions, including the shooting of the victim’s pet hamster with a BB gun after sending her an image of the deceased animal.
Charges and Verdict
Smith faced multiple charges related to sexual assault and coercive behaviour. The court found him guilty of the following offences:
- Coercive and Controlling Behavior: Smith was convicted of engaging in coercive and controlling behaviour, which had a profound impact on the victim’s well-being.
- Sexual Assault by Penetration: He was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault by penetration, reflecting the severity of his actions.
- Disclosure of Private Sexual Material: Smith previously pleaded guilty to disclosing private sexual photographs and films with the intent to cause distress.
However, he pleaded not guilty to rape charges and additional counts of assault against a female by penetration. The jury failed to reach a decision on one count of rape.
Detective Sergeant Jade Lawton’s Statement
Detective Sergeant Jade Lawton, part of Essex Police’s Child Abuse Investigation Team, emphasised the victim’s courage throughout the lengthy investigation. “Smith subjected the victim to months of sexual assault,” Lawton stated. “He filmed himself sexually abusing her and repeatedly sent threatening and controlling messages, which were completely abhorrent.”
Lawton praised the victim’s strength in reporting Smith’s actions and seeking help. “She has carried herself with dignity,” Lawton added, “and I hope she can now begin to move forward, realising that she never deserved this.”
Smith is scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court for sentencing on Friday, June 21.
