Three teenage suspects have been charged following a harrowing incident involving a stolen car that culminated in a serious collision in Maidstone. The event unfolded around 11:55 pm on Monday, May 13, 2024, when a police patrol near Lenham attempted to intercept a Mercedes reportedly stolen from Medway.
Despite police efforts to halt the vehicle, the driver refused, prompting a pursuit into Maidstone town centre. Tragically, the stolen Mercedes collided with another car on St Peter’s Street. The occupant of the second vehicle sustained injuries and was rushed to a London hospital, where they remain in a serious condition. In the aftermath of the collision, authorities arrested a man and two teenage boys, all of whom were taken into custody for further investigation.
Subsequent inquiries led to the charging of Caden Stephens, 18, residing on Gordon Road, Gillingham. Stephens faces multiple charges, including causing serious injury by driving dangerously, burglary, theft of car keys, theft of a motor vehicle, driving without a license, driving without insurance, and failure to provide a specimen of blood for analysis.
Additionally, two other teenage boys, aged 17, from Gillingham and Chatham respectively, were charged with aggravated vehicle taking. Stephens and the 17-year-old from Chatham were remanded in custody to appear before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, May 15. The third suspect, a 17-year-old, was conditionally bailed pending a hearing at Medway Magistrates’ Court scheduled for June 27.
