In a massive operation aimed at tackling drug supply in Piccadilly Gardens, 24 alleged drug dealers were arrested this morning, marking a significant breakthrough in law enforcement’s efforts to combat illicit activities in the area.
For the past six months, Operation Vulcan, supported by specialist officers from the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU), has been conducting an undercover operation in Piccadilly Gardens alongside high-visibility patrols. While the Operation Vulcan team may be familiar in uniform, what went unnoticed were the undercover officers strategically positioned among suspected criminals.
This morning, nearly 300 officers from across the force executed 23 warrants at various addresses across Greater Manchester. A total of 22 men and two women, aged 18 to 45, were apprehended on suspicion of being involved in the supply of class A drugs. They are currently in police custody as their houses undergo thorough searches. Thus far, law enforcement has seized almost £10,000 in cash, hundreds of snap bags of drugs, and recovered several crucial mobile phones and SIM cards.
In an amusing turn of events, a man on Kenchester Avenue was caught on camera attempting to evade police in his dressing gown by hopping fences. However, he was swiftly detained and escorted to custody.
Operation Vulcan Piccadilly, launched in September 2023, was the culmination of extensive interactions with locals, residents, and partners across Manchester. It was a response to community feedback urging the removal of drug dealers from the area.
Detective Sergeant Matt Donnelly from Operation Vulcan expressed the significance of today’s operation, stating, “By arresting 24 people this morning, I can confidently say we have dismantled and disrupted several different county lines and local drug networks. But we won’t be complacent, and this should be a warning for anyone who thinks criminal activity is welcome in our city.
He further emphasized the aim to instil a sense of constant vigilance among criminals, adding, “We want to make sure criminals are living a life of high anxiety, and I hope that anyone who considers coming to Piccadilly Gardens to deal drugs is constantly looking over their shoulder.”
The success of Operation Vulcan underscores law enforcement’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across Greater Manchester, sending a clear message that criminal activities will not be tolerated.
