The QE2 Bridge, a crucial link connecting Kent and Essex over the River Thames, has been closed in both directions due to a police incident, causing major disruptions for commuters. The closure, initiated around 9 am on Tuesday (May 7), has left drivers stranded and traffic at a standstill, amplifying congestion on the M25.
While the exact nature of the incident remains undisclosed, The closure of the bridge clockwise from J31 A1306 (Lakeside / Purfleet) to J1A A206 (Dartford) has caused congestion that has extended to almost J29 Romford, with queues on the A13 stretching back past Grays.
Kent and Essex Police have been contacted for further information regarding the ongoing situation.
This closure compounds existing travel woes on the M25, where drivers were already grappling with severe delays attributed to various factors. Roadworks, a broken-down lorry, and an accident near Heathrow, Potters Bar, and Brentwood had already snarled traffic before the QE2 Bridge closure exacerbated the situation.
Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes and exercise patience as authorities work to resolve the police incident and alleviate congestion on one of the UK’s busiest motorway networks.
