In a humanitarian effort to support the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the London Fire Brigade has mobilized a convoy of 30 fire and rescue vehicles, accompanied by two mechanics’ vehicles and a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) carrying over 2,800 items of surplus equipment. Departing for the Polish-Ukrainian border, this convoy aims to deliver vital fire and rescue kits and equipment to assist Ukrainian firefighters in their ongoing struggle.
Led by Fire Aid and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), this coordinated effort sees the Brigade donating Command Support Units, a fire engine, and hose branches, essential tools used to direct water flow at the end of a fire hose. The convoy comprises 27 Brigade staff, along with firefighters and Fire Aid personnel from across the UK who have volunteered to drive the vehicles and deliver the much-needed equipment.
Among those participating in this humanitarian mission is Borough Commander for Newham, Richard Arnold, who expressed his motivation to contribute to the relief effort. Arnold stated, “The ongoing crisis in Ukraine is a tragedy. Having watched the news, it compelled me to want to do something to help. I am proud to represent the Brigade, supporting this worthwhile cause.”
Deputy Assistant Commissioner and Fire Aid Steering Committee member, Lucy MacLeod, commended the collaborative efforts of staff from different teams and departments within the Brigade, emphasizing the life-saving impact of the donated equipment.
David O’Neill MBE, former Brigade staff member and current Fire Aid Chair, highlighted the importance of the UK fire sector’s solidarity in supporting Ukrainian firefighters amidst escalating conflict. O’Neill emphasized the significance of these donations in providing tangible support to fire stations across Ukraine, enabling them to continue their vital work in serving their communities.
Mark Hardingham, Chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, underscored the resilience of Ukrainian firefighters in the face of adversity, pledging continued support from the UK and the international firefighting community.
The UK ISAR team, comprising specially trained firefighters from fire and rescue services across Britain, stands ready to provide assistance in major incidents globally. As part of this effort, they volunteer to be deployed to disasters worldwide, offering support and expertise in times of crisis.
The convoy’s departure marks a poignant demonstration of solidarity and support for Ukraine, reaffirming the commitment of the UK firefighting community to stand united in times of need.
