In a significant move, the US House of Representatives has given the green light to a $61 billion (£49 billion) aid package aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s military efforts in countering the ongoing Russian invasion. The approval comes at a crucial juncture, as Ukraine’s armed forces grapple with dwindling munitions and escalating hostilities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the decision, emphasising the global importance of democracy and freedom. In a statement, he said, “Democracy and freedom will always have global significance and will never fail as long as America helps to protect it.” Zelenskyy believes that the aid bill, which passed through the House, will not only prevent the war from expanding but also save countless lives and strengthen both nations.
However, the road to approval was not without obstacles. Some Republican lawmakers had reservations about allocating funds overseas. The House Speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, took a bold step by relying on Democratic support to set up a series of votes on three aid packages. Johnson emphasized the critical role of a strong America in deterring terrorists and tyrants worldwide.
The aid package extends beyond Ukraine, with additional support earmarked for Israel and the Indo-Pacific, totalling a staggering $95 billion (£74 billion). The comprehensive bill aims to address regional security concerns and reinforce alliances.
The passage through the House represents a significant milestone, removing the biggest hurdle to President Joe Biden’s funding request. The urgency became apparent last October when Ukraine’s military supplies began running perilously low. With the Senate expected to follow suit in the coming days, President Biden has pledged to sign the aid package immediately.
