Ka Chun Wong, 27, faced allegations of attempted murder in Woolwich Crown Court after a harrowing incident on October 7 last year. Wong is accused of launching a ferocious attack on Ji Wu and Zhi Liang Chen, reportedly catching them in bed together at a flat on Naomi Street, Deptford.
The court heard that the relationships between Wong, Wu, and Chen were tumultuous, marked by on-and-off affairs throughout 2023. Ms. Wu, who had been involved with both men at different times, had recently reunited with Mr. Chen when the tragic event unfolded.
Prosecutor Nathalie McNamee detailed the horrifying attack, describing how Wong barged into Ms. Wu’s flat uninvited, brandishing a meat cleaver. Wong allegedly proceeded to viciously assault the couple, leaving Mr. Chen with eight wounds, including two partially amputated fingers. Despite the severity of the attack, Wong denies intent to kill, admitting only to carrying out the assault.
Wong’s actions, however, were swift and calculated, according to Ms. McNamee. She outlined how Wong had sent a text message to Ms. Wu just days prior, hinting at his feelings of betrayal. When Wong stormed into the flat that fateful morning, he reportedly uttered chilling words before launching the attack.
Mr. Chen, still dazed from sleep, found himself under siege as Wong hacked away with the meat cleaver. Despite the brief duration of the assault, the injuries inflicted were severe, leaving both victims in critical condition. Ms Wu’s desperate plea, “he’s going to die,” brought an end to the onslaught as Wong seized their phones and fled the scene.
In the aftermath, Wong attempted to evade authorities but was later apprehended in Brighton. The prosecution argues that Wong’s actions demonstrate premeditated intent to kill, citing the severity of the attack and his subsequent attempts to conceal his whereabouts.
As the trial unfolds, the jury faces the daunting task of determining Wong’s intentions during the horrific ordeal. With evidence pointing to a calculated assault with deadly intent, the proceedings are poised to shed light on the true nature of Wong’s actions on that fateful day.
