Coventry Police have issued a heartfelt appeal to the public following the desecration of a memorial plaque dedicated to PC Peter Charles Guthrie, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty in 1972.
The memorial plaque, situated on Far Gosford Street in Coventry, was discovered shattered on April 7, prompting a swift response from law enforcement officers. PC Guthrie, a 21-year-old newlywed police officer, was fatally shot while investigating an intruder alarm at a local shop on July 22, 1972.
In recognition of his bravery, PC Guthrie was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry. Exactly 50 years after his untimely death, the Police Memorial Trust unveiled the plaque in his honor.
Chair of The Police Memorial Trust, Mrs. Michael Winner, expressed deep regret over the vandalism, assuring PC Guthrie’s family, friends, and colleagues that efforts are underway to replace the memorial. Mrs. Winner urged anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and assist authorities in their investigation.
Detective Chief Inspector Adam Jobson, representing Coventry Police, reiterated the determination of law enforcement to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the plaque’s damage. We do not know how the plaque has been damaged, but we are determined to establish the details, and we will chase all lines of inquiries,” stated Jobson.
