Police Charge Individual After Migrants Found in Lorry at Newhaven Ferry Port
Urgent Operation at Newhaven Port Discovers People in Freezer Lorry

Authorities have charged an individual with assisting unlawful entry into the UK after six migrants were discovered in the back of a lorry at Newhaven ferry port in East Sussex. The incident, which unfolded on Friday, prompted a swift response from emergency services, though fortunately, there have been no reported deaths.

While the Home Office did not disclose the identity of the individual charged, it confirmed that two men were arrested in connection with the incident. One was detained on suspicion of people smuggling, while the other was held on suspicion of entering the UK illegally.

The migrants believed to be of Asian origin, were found concealed behind a false wall in the back of the van. Staff onboard the ‘Seven Sisters‘ ferry, which had just crossed the Channel from Dieppe, heard banging noises emanating from the vehicle as they prepared to dock at Newhaven port. Subsequent checks revealed the hidden compartment, prompting workers to summon security personnel to break down the wall and free the trapped individuals.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of urgency as emergency services attended to the migrants, some of whom were unconscious. Paramedics provided oxygen and wrapped the individuals in foil blankets before transporting them to the hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the van, along with another individual believed to have been in the passenger seat, was arrested at the scene. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with Border Force, Immigration Enforcement, and emergency services continuing to probe the matter.

People trafficking into the UK has become a contentious issue in recent years, with smugglers resorting to various methods to evade detection. The discovery at Newhaven ferry port underscores the challenges faced by authorities in combating illegal entry into the country.

As the investigation progresses, authorities remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of robust border security measures to prevent further incidents of this nature.
