Virgin Media O2 has joined the UK’s 3G shutdown party, turning off its ageing 3G network to ramp up faster and more powerful 4G and 5G services. After switching off 3G in cities like Durham, Norwich, and Torquay, Watford is next in line this Wednesday, September 17.

The full 3G switchoff across the UK will be wrapped up by the end of the year. It’s all part of a 2021 government-backed push by major mobile providers, including EE, Three, and Vodafone, to ditch outdated tech and boost mobile internet quality.

Why Virgin Media O2 Is Dumping 3G

“Switching off our 3G network will enable us to focus our investment on upgrading faster, more reliable and more energy-efficient 4G and 5G networks, giving our customers a better overall experience,” said Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2.

York added that most customers already have 4G or 5G handsets and won’t need to lift a finger. But those still clinging to 3G devices in Watford need to act fast or lose mobile data access entirely.

Who Will Feel the Pinch?

Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert warns:

“If you have a phone or SIM that only supports 3G, you’ll effectively no longer be able to use the internet once it’s fully switched off by your provider. You’ll struggle to do even basic tasks online.”

Still Using a 3G Phone? Here’s What to Do

Virgin Media O2 says vulnerable customers using 3G devices have been offered free 4G-ready phones. Everyone else can grab a new device at a discounted price. Plus, you can recycle your old handset via O2 Recycle for some cash back.

Worried if your handset is about to fall off the network? Head to Virgin Media O2’s official website and check their list of devices incompatible with 4G and WiFi calling. Here are some classic casualties:

Don’t get caught out by the 3G shutdown! Upgrade your phone now and surf the faster waves of 4G and 5G before it’s too late.
