Marine Coastguard Agency Mast Transformation Stirs Maritime Community

Marine Coastguard Agency Mast Transformation Stirs Maritime Community

The local maritime community has noticed a significant change in the skyline as the Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) mast in Newhaven has undergone a substantial reduction in height, with about 15 meters chopped off from its top due to deteriorating conditions. This alteration also led to the removal of the outdated VHF DF array, marking a new chapter in the mast’s history.
Photo – Paul Farley Photo – Paul Farley In an update that will intrigue technology and maritime enthusiasts alike, the antennas on the mast have been meticulously reconfigured. Some have been re-fed, and notable changes include an update for Seahaven FM, which now sports new ‘string’. At the pinnacle of the mast, two colinears command attention; one serves the Automatic Identification System (AIS), while the other functions as a common receive antenna.
Looking towards the south side of the mast, the folded dipoles are hard to miss. These are designated for the fixed and tunable MCA channels, with their signals being remotely directed back to the National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC) in Fareham. The north side of the mast houses the RNLI’s pager-specific folded dipole and Seahaven’s cardioid dipole array, supported alongside two horizontal Yagis stabilized with rope.
Interestingly, a pair of redundant dipoles are also visible in the recent photographs. These were initially set up for the Sussex Ambulance service as an emergency backup during the Labour Party Conference in Brighton, serving as a reminder of the mast’s versatile history.
Special thanks go to Paul Farley, who provided not only the striking photographs capturing these changes but also shared valuable insights into the technical aspects of the mast’s transformation.

Man Sentenced for Severe Child Sex Offences in Liverpool

Martin Price, a 42-year-old man with no fixed abode, has been sentenced for a series of disturbing sex offences involving children. The verdict was delivered after a trial at Liverpool Crown Court, where Price faced eight charges.

The charges against Price included:

Sexual Assault on a Child Under 13

Causing or Inciting a Child to Engage in Sexual Activity

Making an Indecent Image of a Child

Causing a Child to Watch a Sex Act

Engaging in Sexual Activity in the Presence of a Child

These acts targeted two vulnerable children and occurred within the jurisdiction of Merseyside. The court proceedings revealed the gravity of Price’s actions, leading to a unanimous guilty verdict.

On Friday, March 8, the judge handed down a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence to Price. Additionally, he received a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 10-year restraining order. Furthermore, Price is now subject to a notification requirement for an indefinite period.

Detective Constable Alexandra Lawrence, who played a crucial role in the investigation, expressed her strong condemnation of Price’s behaviour: “The behaviour displayed by Price was utterly appalling, and he deserves to be behind bars for several years.” She commended the victims for their immense courage and bravery in coming forward to report the crimes.

Despite Price’s plea of not guilty, the jury saw through his lies and rightly convicted him. Detective Constable Lawrence urged anyone who has experienced any form of sexual abuse or knows of a child being abused to come forward and report it to the police. Specially trained officers are available to handle such sensitive cases with compassion and care.

Horsham Residents Urged to Recycle Diligently after Fire Incident

Horsham Residents Urged to Recycle Diligently after Fire Incident

Horsham District Council is calling on its residents to practice diligent recycling after batteries sparked a fire in a waste collection vehicle.
The council’s waste team managed to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers and headed back to Hop Oast depot to offload the truck’s contents. The West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was also on hand to confirm the fire was fully extinguished.
Firefighters traced the origin of the fire to a set of battery-operated lights, aggravated by other non-recyclable items in the load, which contributed to the fire’s spread. The 5-tonne recycling load had to be discarded as waste due to the fire.
Councillor Jay Mercer, Cabinet Member for Environmental Health, Recycling, and Waste, expressed relief that no injuries or significant damages occurred, crediting the waste team’s prompt actions.
Mercer highlighted the dangers of improperly disposing of batteries, which can lead to fires when compacted in collection trucks. He urged the community to safely recycle loose batteries by placing them in a bag atop their bins on collection day and to utilize the council’s complimentary collection service for small electronics.
