Exploring the Bizarre Lost Items on Brighton & Hove Buses in 2023

Brighton and Hove’s buses turned into unexpected treasure chests in 2023, with the city’s lost property team uncovering a bizarre array of forgotten belongings. From the mundane to the utterly astonishing, the collection paints a picture of the diverse and creative community that rides the city’s buses.
Common items like wallets, phones, keys, and winter wear were, as expected, frequently handed in. However, the list of lost items takes a turn for the extraordinary with the inclusion of 71 manual scooters – averaging more than one per week – and even five entire bicycles found aboard the city’s public transport.
The musical talent of Brighton and Hove’s residents was also evident, with lost property including four guitars, a silver flute, a harmonica, alongside drumsticks, guitar picks, sheet music, and empty instrument cases. Reflecting the city’s artistic flair, numerous pieces of artwork, including a full canvas painting, were also turned in.
Umbrellas topped the list with over 400 found, showcasing Brighton’s unpredictable weather, while the honesty of the city’s residents shone through with over £1,000 in cash being returned to its rightful owners.
Among the more peculiar finds were nine items of underwear, including a bra and a thong, and even a velvet pouch containing an adult toy, hinting at the unexpected stories of bus riders’ lives. Electronics were not spared, with a PS5 controller, a Nintendo Switch, a full VR headset, and over 100 sets of headphones among the items left behind. One bus driver even discovered an iron.
Larger forgotten items included golf clubs, a drying rack, an air mattress, and a giant cuddly elephant, adding to the intrigue. The list of oddities continued with a replica sword, a toilet seat, pom poms, and dentures.
Among the most baffling finds was a large suitcase containing three empty egg boxes, a large stuffed dog, a single shoe, six 3-foot pieces of wood, a dressing gown, and, most surprisingly, someone’s cat, which was thankfully safely returned to a local vet.

Exciting New Development Plan for Newhaven’s West Beach Car Park

A new planning application has been submitted to Lewes District Council for the redevelopment of the West Beach car park in Newhaven, signaling potential enhancements and new amenities for the local community and visitors. The application, identified as LW/24/0051, proposes the demolition of existing structures to make way for a single-story restaurant, splash pads, an outdoor gym, children’s play areas, and toilet and changing facilities, along with further informal open spaces and associated landscaping at the West Pier Amusement Arcade on Fort Road, Newhaven, East Sussex.
On-going construction of the Promenade Newhaven – c.1880 The ambitious project aims to breathe new life into the area, offering a variety of recreational and dining options that cater to all ages. The proposed development represents a significant investment in Newhaven’s leisure and tourism infrastructure, potentially attracting more visitors to the area and boosting the local economy.
Meanwhile, questions have resurfaced regarding the reopening of Newhaven’s sandy beach, closed since 2008 after Newhaven Port and Properties declared it unsafe. The closure has been a contentious issue, with several failed attempts to reopen the beach to the public. The struggle culminated in a legal battle that reached the Supreme Court in 2013, where Newhaven Town Council and East Sussex County Council fought for the beach to be granted village green status. However, the Supreme Court ruled that such a designation would interfere with the harbour authority’s ability to perform its statutory functions, leaving the beach closed.
Councillor Sean MacLeod recently addressed the ongoing debate over the beach’s future on social media, stating, “I can’t answer on the sandy beach questions, I understand talks are still ongoing between the beach owners and Lewes DC, but I’m limited on information on that one.” The statement highlights the ongoing negotiations and the complex legal and administrative challenges involved in reopening the beach.

Rain Doesn’t Dampen Spirits at Arrival of Eastbourne’s New Lifeboat

Eastbourne, February 10, 2024 – Eastbourne Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) celebrated the arrival of their new station All Weather Lifeboat, the ‘Esme Anderson’ 14-02, previously on service at Ramsgate for nearly three decades. The ceremonial arrival took place at Sovereign Harbour, marking a new chapter in the storied history of lifesaving efforts along the coast.
The ‘Esme Anderson’ made a grand entrance into the harbour, escorted by the Eastbourne D Class Inshore Lifeboat ‘David H,’ the station’s current All Weather Lifeboat ‘Henry Heys Duckworth,’ and support from neighbouring stations’ lifeboats in Hastings and Newhaven. Despite the rain, a spirited crowd of supporters, volunteers, and community members gathered to witness and celebrate the momentous occasion.
Station Mechanic James Wishman expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the community. “On behalf of everyone at Eastbourne Lifeboat Station, I’d like to thank all those who came out in the rain to cheer and welcome the arrival of our new station All Weather Lifeboat,”

The Future of Match of the Day: Uncertainty Looms Over Football Broadcasting Rights

Gary Lineker has confirmed why he pulled out of this weekend’s episode of Match Of The Day after issuing a statement to fans.
For more than 20 years, the former England international player has hosted the programme and remains one of the most recognisable faces in sports broadcasting.
Mark Chapman, who hosts Match Of The Day 2, replaced Lineker on Saturday night and took on the job of interviewing guests, reviewing highlights and more.
Gary Lineker explains why he pulled out of Match Of The Day
Discussing his Match Of The Day absence on X, formally known as Twitter, he said: “Some good news for some: I’ve been silenced….with a rotten cold that seems to be lasting forever. Hate missing hosting @BBCMOTD but I’ll be watching.”
The episode, which aired at around 10:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, covered several Premier League matches involving teams like Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.
This comes after Gary Lineker was temporarily taken off the air after ‘breaching’ impartiality guidelines set out by the broadcaster.
At the time, the star criticised the government’s asylum policy, responding to a video by Home Secretary Suella Braverman to say: “Good heavens, this is beyond awful.”
He added in another message: “This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”
After backlash from colleagues and high-profile public figures from across the country, Lineker was fully reinstated and continues to present MOTD.
When asked about what his future plans are, he said: “I don’t know. I’ve still got almost two years left on my contract. So it’s too early to contemplate that at the moment.
“But I mean I love doing Match of the Day, but, you know, obviously what happens with… football rights and things like that, will determine things and you know, things change.”
