Princess Royal Unveils £120M MRC Laboratory at Imperial College London

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal officially opened the £120 million state-of-the-art MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) building on Imperial College London’s Hammersmith campus. The eight-storey structure, clad in striking anodised aluminium, is set to become a hub for groundbreaking medical research, hosting 400 scientists specializing in genes and the environment, heart and metabolic disease, and sex-based differences in disease.
The institute, hosted by Imperial College London, stands out as one of only two laboratories in the UK wholly funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC). The newly designed facility aims to bridge the gap between fundamental biological research and clinical applications, with a central staircase and atrium promoting collaboration among scientists from diverse disciplines.
LMS director Professor Wiebke Arlt, who assumed the role in January 2023, champions a novel approach to research by emphasizing challenge-led team science. This collaborative model, co-designed with stakeholders including scientists, clinicians, patients, and the public, marks a departure from traditional ‘hero science.’
Professor Arlt expressed delight in welcoming The Princess Royal, emphasizing the new building’s environment tailored for collaborative, interdisciplinary research. The design encourages interaction, fostering a team-science approach that transcends disciplinary boundaries.
The Princess Royal, during the opening, toured key facilities such as the ‘fly lab,’ investigating aging and metabolism factors, and Professor Rueda’s lab, employing video game technology to study DNA behavior. The tour also showcased the cardiac imaging facility with an artificial intelligence tool detecting hidden signs of aging in the heart.
The Executive Chair of MRC, Patrick Chinnery, expressed gratitude to The Princess Royal, highlighting her continued support for science and women in STEM. The event holds special significance as The Princess Royal inaugurated the lab’s first building in 1995. Chinnery emphasized the importance of long-term investment in science infrastructure, echoing MRC’s commitment to research for human health.
As the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences enters this new era, the collaboration between MRC, Professor Wiebke Arlt, and the LMS team promises groundbreaking contributions to medical science and human health.

NSPCC Partners with Common Sense Media to Prioritise Child Safety in AI

Young people are reaching out to Childline with concerns about AI-generated child sexual abuse material, the NSPCC revealed as it launched a new partnership with Common Sense Media. The children’s charity highlighted that Childline has also been contacted regarding harm linked to generative AI, including issues such as the spread of misinformation and bullying.
The collaboration between NSPCC and Common Sense Media aims to advocate for child safety during the development of new AI technology. This partnership will apply pressure on tech firms and policymakers to prioritise child safety and wellbeing in decision-making processes concerning artificial intelligence.
The proliferation of AI tools, especially generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, has sparked increased debate on how to ensure the safe development of AI technology. The NSPCC emphasizes the high risks children face from unregulated and unsafe AI, calling for their safety and experiences to be central in discussions about AI development and regulations.
As part of the alliance, NSPCC and Common Sense Media will introduce education programs to enhance digital literacy skills in schools. Additionally, they plan to conduct joint research on the impact of generative AI on children, aiming to gain insights into potential risks and ways to address them.
NSPCC Chief Executive Sir Peter Wanless stated, “The risk children face from unregulated and unsafe AI is already far too high, and their safety and experiences must be at the centre of conversations about its development and regulations. This partnership will seek to do that while also empowering young people with digital literacy skills to help them thrive.”
James P Steyer, Founder and Chief Executive of Common Sense Media, stressed the need for global collaboration to ensure children’s best interests are considered in AI design, development, and deployment. He stated, “The NSPCC, and the UK more broadly, is seeing great progress by activating its educators, parents, and policymakers, and we look forward to amplifying their efforts in the US and globally.”

DJ Jailed for Assault on Cancer Patient in Llanelli Social Club

Leigh Brookfield, a 40-year-old DJ from Llanelli, has been sentenced to 14 weeks in jail after admitting to assaulting cancer patient Peter Barton at the Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club on December 26 last year. The incident involved Brookfield urinating on the back of Mr. Barton’s trousers, an act he later posted on Snapchat.
Llanelli Magistrates’ Court heard that the DJ, residing at Dan Y Lan in Llanelli, committed the assault when both men were at the urinals of the club. Mr. Barton had shared details of his cancer diagnosis with Brookfield before becoming a victim of the offensive act.
In a victim personal statement read in court, Mr. Barton expressed his shock and distress upon discovering the video online. “I couldn’t believe someone would do that to another person. I was breathless, and my blood pressure was through the roof. I just feel that his actions were absolutely disgusting,” he stated.
Brookfield’s representative, Robert Thomas, acknowledged the severity of the incident, describing his client as “extremely embarrassed, ashamed, and very sorry about what he has done.” Thomas informed the court that Brookfield had ceased drinking and taking drugs, viewing the incident as a “wake-up call.”
District Judge Mark Layton, while sentencing Brookfield, stressed the severity of assaulting a vulnerable victim who was unaware of the act at the time. The judge imposed a 14-week prison sentence, with Brookfield set to serve half before release. Additionally, Brookfield was ordered to pay £500 compensation, a £154 surcharge, and £85 in costs.
The Llanelli Tennis and Squash Club, in response to the incident, posted a statement on Facebook, expressing its dismay at being associated with Brookfield’s actions. The club described Mr. Barton as a “valued member” and banned Brookfield for life, affirming its commitment to being a family-friendly establishment.

Fans of a beloved chocolate bar have been left outraged after Cadbury confirmed that the recipe had changed.
The Time Out recipe was originally changed all the way back in 2016 with fans of the bar repeatedly calling for it to revert back to the original.
The change was confirmed by the brand this week after a user tweeted on X, formally known as Twitter, to ask: “Is there any chance of bringing back the original Time Out bar? These are just not the same and depressing.”
Cadbury confirms Time Out recipe change amid fan outrage
Cadbury quickly responded to the post, saying: “Peoples’ tastes change from time to time, so it’s important that we have a wide range of products to cater for everyone.”
Upset by this response, the user quipped: “But the original obviously tasted better!”
Others appeared to share his frustration with one person writing: “The original Time Out was one of my favourite chocolates… but once they turned into wafers, they weren’t nice.”
A second person called on the brand to “bring back the original Time Out,” with another adding: “haven’t been the same since they made them a biscuit.”
Originally, Time Out came in packs of two and weighed a combined 50g.
However, recent incarnations of this beloved chocolate have appeared in packs of one, weighing just 20g.

The size isn’t the only difference noticed by fans with the recipe also being altered to include more wafer and less chocolate.
This was part of a move by Cadbury to make the confectionary more health-conscious amid dwindling sales.
Speaking of the changes, a Cadbury spokesperson said: “Research shows Cadbury Time Out wasn’t as popular as other bars so instead of discontinuing, we’ve gave it a helping hand with a few changes!”
This comes as popular treats like Caramac and Peanut Caramel Crisp were axed by the giant.
