Facebook Adverts Lead To Man Being Charged With Multiple Offences

A thorough investigation by the Economic Crime Team has resulted in the charging of a man with 18 offences related to a social media marketplace scam. The investigation was prompted by reports from multiple victims in areas across Essex, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire.

According to the complainants, they had placed items for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Upon meeting with potential buyers, they were promised payment through a bank transfer. However, despite appearances of a successful transaction, no payment was ever received.

Following meticulous investigations into each reported incident, officers were able to make an arrest. Stephen Stokes, a 30-year-old resident of Arterial Road, Wickford, has been charged with 17 counts of fraud by false representation and one count of sending a communication conveying a threatening message.

Stokes is scheduled to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on October 30 to face these charges.

The allegations in Essex encompass various areas, including South Ockendon, Great Notley, Basildon, Rochford, Witham, and Grays. The victims, who fell victim to this social media marketplace scam, have played a vital role in helping law enforcement bring this case to fruition.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have fallen victim to similar scams or who may have information relevant to this case to come forward. It is essential to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions and to report any suspicious activity to the police.
